How Are Wahoo Decks' Products Manufactured?

All of our products are precision extruded with marine-grade aluminum. Extruding is the process of pressure-forcing heated aluminum through a die so that it takes on the die’s cross-sectional shape. This is the same concept as a Play Dough spaghetti machine when you were a kid! Extrusions create a seamless product to exacting specifications with very precise tolerances, in other words a defect free profile.

DryJoistEZ™

FAQs for DryJoistEZ™

What is the difference between DryJoist and DryJoist EZ?

DryJoist and DryJoist EZ are very similar in that they are both structural deck drainage systems.  Both of these materials replace a typical joist system with a waterproof deck structure and a finished ceiling underneath.  The main difference is the spanning capabilities.  Dryjoist EZ spans up to 6 feet between supporting beams, and DryJoist spans up to 8 feet.  The allowable span can vary for each project depending on local requirements.   If you are unsure which product is best for your project,  contact the Wahoo Decks team and we will be happy to help.

How does the DryJoistEZ system differ from other deck waterproofing products?

DryJoistEZ is a structural deck drainage system; this means that along with being 100% waterproof, it also replaces the conventional deck joist system you would traditionally use to build your deck.
Other deck waterproofing systems on the market are either membrane systems or “under decking” type systems that are installed below your deck joists. Both waterproofing systems come with highly labor-intensive installation processes and are only effective for limited amounts of time.

The component materials used in the DryJoistEZ system are extruded from marine-grade aluminum, which makes them very rigid and extremely durable.  When the DryJoistEZ system is installed, it provides a solid waterproof structure that will never leak. Additionally, DryJoistEZ is mounted on top of your deck frame, which extends the life of framing materials.

What type of deck boards can I use with DryJoistEZ?

DryJoistEZ provides the ultimate flexibility, with no limitations when it comes to your deck surface options.  Your choices include composite deck boards, hardwoods, softwoods, etc.  In essence, DryJoistEZ has support every 4” to 6”, which allows you to fasten your deck boards every 4”/6”/8”/10”/12”.

Is DryJoist EZ environmentally friendly?

Yes. DryJoistEZ is manufactured using 45% recycled content from industrial and post-consumer aluminum scrap metal. It also channels rainwater, which reduces pollution from stormwater runoff.  Because of its recycled content and its ability to manage stormwater, DryJoistEZ also assists builders in achieving points toward LEED credit certification based on the standards set forth by the LEED Green Building Rating System, within the categories of Recycled Content of Materials, Construction Waste Management, and Stormwater Design.

My deck frame was built using ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) pressure treated wood, is it compatible with the DryJoistEZ system?

Yes, DryJoist was designed to be compatible with ACQ treated lumber. It is produced with a barrier coating (a special powder-coat paint applied at the mill) to prevent ACQ contact with the bare aluminum. As a matter of fact, AridDek™ aluminum decking by Wahoo Decks has been used with ACQ since it was introduced a few years ago. It can be found on some of the country’s finest boat docks, manufactured by Wahoo Docks.

Do I need special tools to install or cut DryJoistEZ?

No. DryJoistEZ can be installed with a minimum number of readily-available tools. No special tools are necessary for installation.

How do I cut DryJoistEZ?

  • Carbide-tipped blade for cutting non-ferrous metals
  • 12” blade-96 tooth
  • 10” blade 80 tooth
  • 7 ¼” blade 62 tooth

(Available at local building supply stores.)

Do I need to pitch DryJoistEZ?

Yes, we suggest a minimum of 1/8” downward pitch per foot (away from the house). This is a minimal pitch that will not be visible to the naked eye, yet provides a generous slope for water to drain away from the structure.

Can I cantilever DryJoistEZ? Is there a suggested overhang?

Yes.  DryJoistEZ can cantilever up to twelve inches.  A two-inch overhang beyond the header joist on the drainage side is suggested to shield the joists from backsplash due to heavy downpour and ease optional gutter installation.

Is the DryJoistEZ structural deck drainage system compliant with local building codes and the International Building Code?

Yes. DryJoist meets or exceeds deck building code specifications and guidelines for aluminum structures, as recommended by AA ADM 1 and required by the International Building Code – 2012.

Do I have to install gutters or downspouts?

Installing gutters or downspouts is not required, although they can be installed if you would like to incorporate your deck with your landscape architecture and design.

Will my AridDek ever rust?

AridDek is extruded from a pure aluminum alloy and is aluminum decking that cannot rust. However, as with other decking materials including wood, composite, or even concrete, steel products that come in contact with AridDek can rust and even stain AridDek. Do not store metal objects that could rust and stain your deck on AridDek. Avoid metal working on AridDek too. When installing iron railings, protect AridDek with a non-plastic drop cloth to prevent grinding dust and weld splatter from settling on the surface of AridDek.

Do I have to pitch AridDek?

Yes, we suggest minimum 1/8” pitch per linear foot. This is a minimal pitch that will not be visible to the naked eye but provides a generous slope for water to drain away from the structure.

Do I need special tools to install AridDek?

No. AridDek can be installed with a minimum number of readily available tools. No special tools are necessary for installation.

Can I cantilever AridDek? Is there a suggested overhang?

AridDek is a maintenance free decking product – these interlocking deck boards create the surface for your deck. And since it is a deck board it cannot be cantilevered – deck boards should never be cantilevered. A 2” overhang beyond the fascia on the drainage side is suggested to shield the joists from backsplash due to heavy downpour and ease optional gutter installation.

Are the AridDek waterproof deck boards compliant with local building codes and International Building Codes?

Yes. AridDek meets or exceeds deck building code specifications and guidelines for aluminum structures, as recommended by AA ADM 1 and required by the International Building Code – 2012. Building Code Requirements – International Building Code – 2012.

My deck frame was built using ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) pressure treated wood, is it compatible with AridDek aluminum decking boards?

Yes, AridDek was designed to be compatible with ACQ treated lumber. It is produced with a barrier coating (a special powder-coat paint applied at the mill) to prevent ACQ contact with the bare aluminum. As a matter of fact, an aluminum decking product we manufacture, called AridDek™ has been used with ACQ since this lumber treatment was introduced a few years ago. It can be found on some of the country’s most prestigious boat dock systems, seen on the Wahoo Docks website.

Other building products that are not compatible with ACQ recommend simply adding a felt paper or PVC barrier (sheets or strips) to prevent contact with ACQ treated lumber. The point here is that it’s not difficult to use other standard metal components such as uncoated aluminum – or uncoated steel – while ACQ is still the standard pressure treatment for lumber.

Decking fastener manufacturers understand the issues with ACQ and have developed stainless steel, coated steel, and electroplated screw fasteners, specifically for use with ACQ. ACQ will soon be replaced with another treatment that is friendly to standard building materials such a aluminum, steel, and steel coatings. There are mills and manufacturers that already produce and sell non-ACQ treated lumber. More can be read about these new treatments and products in web articles on the same subject.

Do I have to install gutters or downspouts?

Installing gutters or downspouts is not required, although they can be installed if you would like to incorporate your deck with your landscape architecture and design.

Can AridDek be used for the deck joists?

No, AridDek can not be used as a component as a truss, structural framing applications for joists, rafters, or support beams. AridDek should solely be used for deck flooring. it just happens to be watertight deck flooring.

What type of blade should I use to cut AridDek?

  • Carbide-tipped nonferrous blade
  • 12” blade-96 tooth
  • 10” blade 80 tooth
  • 7 ¼” blade 62 tooth

(Available at local building supply stores.)

What are the joist spacing requirements when installing AridDek aluminum decking?

The maximum allowable joist spacing is 24” on-center when installing the aluminum deck boards on pre-existing or new joist structures.

How much does Ariddek weigh?

AridDek Aluminum Deck Boards weigh 1 lb per linear foot /2lbs per square foot. (Approximately ½ the weight of traditional wooden deck boards.)
