Save Time and Money with AridDek Aluminum Decking for a Dry Under Deck Area

Ever heard the old saying, “Time is money”? It may be an old saying, but it still holds true, and at Wahoo Decks, we know that. That’s why we designed AridDek Aluminum Decking – for a dry under deck area – to save you time AND money!

Time and Money

Not only can AridDek save time and money, but it can also give you a dry under deck area.  This area and be used for storage, or you can create another space for relaxation.

  • Time Savings: Your order arrives at your door with each board custom-sized to your specifications. That saves you time and helps prevent wasted material. Moreover, the built-in fastener system requires only one screw every 24″. This means you’ll spend less time on installation time. Plus, you’ll use fewer costly fasteners than you would with most other decking systems.
  • Cost Savings: AridDek’s innovative design eliminates the need for additional under-deck systems or waterproof substructures. This makes it the most cost-effective way to create a dry space beneath your deck. It can span 24″ as opposed to 16″ (typical for the most traditional decking). Therefore, the saving on the deck substructures makes AridDek even more affordable.

New Construction and Remodeling

AridDek aluminum decking is ideal for new construction or the remodeling of existing outdoor structures and provides a lifetime of low-maintenance benefits. It’s also a great choice if having a dry under deck area matters to you.

In addition to being time and cost-saving, AridDek aluminum decking creates a dry under deck living space in a single, beautiful deck system.  Furthermore, each interlocking aluminum decking board has a hidden fastener system for a gapless, skid-free, single layer watertight decking surface.

Rather than expensive add-on under deck systems, time-intensive routine maintenance, or rebuilding your deck from the ground up, AridDek’s easy installation adds value and space in a single decking system.

Wahoo Decks Puts Aluminum Deck Fire Safety to the Test

Wahoo Decks proves aluminum deck materials have excellent fire safety! With our aluminum decks, building a deck is an exciting project. But one priority you should not forget is the fire safety of your deck.

“Decks catch fire one of two ways. A burning [amber] landing on the surface of the deck is all that’s required. . . The other common cause of deck fires is flames from unmaintained vegetation igniting the deck from below” (Bolton).  Grill fires, for example, are often a cause for fires and can even lead to the fire dangerously spreading. “32% of grill fires on residential properties start on patios, terraces, screened-in porches, or courtyards, while an additional 24% start on exterior balconies and unenclosed porches” (FEMA).

That’s why it is essential to consider a product (such as our aluminum deck options) that is non-combustible and fire-safe when building a deck. However, most decking boards are not fireproof and can easily smoke and smolder.

Wahoo Decks recently decided to investigate the flammability of our aluminum deck boards in a hot charcoal test. This test involved taking hot charcoal from a grill and setting in on decking boards, such as wood/plastic composite, pressure-treated pine, and Brazilian Ipe hardwood and comparing it to AridDek aluminum decking.

Check out the video below to see what happens when hot charcoal lands on decking boards.

It just takes a short amount of time before other boards begin to melt, smolder, smoke, and burn to the point of ruin. Whereas AridDek bears no marks or burns and does not even smoke from the hot charcoal. Simply wipe it down, and AridDek looks good as new.

Remember the importance of fireproofing your deck when considering decking material options for your deck. Safety is essential in all aspects of your home, whether it’s inside or outdoors! Visit Wahoo Decks online to learn more about Wahoo Decks’ other fireproof aluminum decking products or call at 1 (877) 270-9387.

Wahoo Decks Waterproof Decking: Harvesting Rainwater

Did you know when you install our waterproof decking, it’s possible to harvest rainwater?  DryJoistEZ, and AridDek aluminum decks using Wahoo Decks’ waterproof decking help to collect rainwater that would generally run right off your deck.

Harvesting and recycling rainwater has become more popular than ever.  Not only does it help the environment, but it also saves you money. Thus, it’s no surprise that many people are harvesting rainwater since the average American uses 100 gallons of water per day, and more than 50% of that is for outdoor use (Bates).

There are several uses for the rainwater you can collect with our waterproof decking. For example, you can use the recycled water on plants or lawns and even use it to wash your car. Plants especially respond well to rainwater, and therefore plant growth improves. This is because rain is naturally soft water and devoid of minerals, chlorine, fluoride, and other chemicals (Rain Barrel Guide).

Here are more reasons why rainwater harvested from our waterproof decking is beneficial:

  • Relief of strain on other water supply
  • Ability to build or farm in areas with no other water supply
  • Increased water independence and security
  • Lower water supply costs
  • Reduced flood flows
  • Reduced topsoil loss
  • Control water saturation around foundations and basement walls
Drawing of a Rain Barrel for Harvesting Water

Diagram of a rain barrel.

To harvest rainwater from your Wahoo waterproof decking, you will need to have a gutter collecting the water that runs off of your deck. The simplest way to obtain the rainwater from your deck and gutter is to install a rain barrel. Rain barrels are just large containers, usually ranging in size of 50-80 gallon barrels, that capture the rainwater at the end of the downspout of your gutter. They are a simple, efficient, and low-cost method for homeowners to collect and recycle the water runoff from the deck.

Check out the video to learn more about rain barrels.

If you are considering installing a rain barrel around your deck, be sure to check with your city; some cities give away rain barrels for free or at least offer a discount.

Because Wahoo Decks offers an entirely waterproof area below your deck via our waterproof decking, all rainwater is caught by our watertight decking boards and can be directed to a gutter. The space below your deck will stay completely dry while the water can be recycled. Making a difference in our environment is vital to Wahoo Decks; that is why we are happy to offer waterproof decking systems with an under deck drainage system that makes it easy to harvest rainwater.

Wahoo Decks’ aluminum products, such as DryJoistEZ, and AridDek also help gain LEED credits.

Deck Ideas: 5 Safety Tips for Having an Outdoor Fire Pit

Looking for ways to make your deck more enjoyable? Our deck ideas can help! One of the more popular deck ideas these days is adding an outdoor fire pit to your living area. No matter what season it is,  you can break out the fire pit with friends and family. After all, “According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, fire pits, or outdoor fireplaces, are the number one requested design feature today,” (HGTV).

While portable fire pits are a lot of fun, there are some serious safety precautions to keep in mind when handling them.

  1. Your outdoor fire pit should be at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustible surface.
  2. Avoid windy conditions by checking the weather forecast
  3. Stay up to date on any burn bans that might be in effect
  4. Pick up leaves and any other combustible materials in and around the fire pit
  5. Keep a container of water nearby and a garden hose close

While you’re getting ready to entertain and considering all your deck ideas, bear in mind the location you put your fire pit. Do NOT put a portable fire pit on your deck if it is made of wood. This can be very dangerous! If you were to knock over the coals it can also ruin your deck’s walking surface. However, with AridDek aluminum deck boards, you’ll never have to worry about coals from your portable fire pit ruining or igniting your deck.

Check out this video to see how AridDek aluminum decking compares to other common decking options in a hot charcoal test:

Remember, you should always keep your portable fire pit at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustible surface.
