Wahoo Decks Waterproof Decking: Harvesting Rainwater

Wahoo Decks Waterproof Decking: Harvesting Rainwater

Did you know when you install our waterproof decking, it’s possible to harvest rainwater?  DryJoistEZ, and AridDek aluminum decks using Wahoo Decks’ waterproof decking help to collect rainwater that would generally run right off your deck.

Harvesting and recycling rainwater has become more popular than ever.  Not only does it help the environment, but it also saves you money. Thus, it’s no surprise that many people are harvesting rainwater since the average American uses 100 gallons of water per day, and more than 50% of that is for outdoor use (Bates).

There are several uses for the rainwater you can collect with our waterproof decking. For example, you can use the recycled water on plants or lawns and even use it to wash your car. Plants especially respond well to rainwater, and therefore plant growth improves. This is because rain is naturally soft water and devoid of minerals, chlorine, fluoride, and other chemicals (Rain Barrel Guide).

Here are more reasons why rainwater harvested from our waterproof decking is beneficial:

  • Relief of strain on other water supply
  • Ability to build or farm in areas with no other water supply
  • Increased water independence and security
  • Lower water supply costs
  • Reduced flood flows
  • Reduced topsoil loss
  • Control water saturation around foundations and basement walls
Drawing of a Rain Barrel for Harvesting Water

To harvest rainwater from your Wahoo waterproof decking, you will need to have a gutter collecting the water that runs off of your deck. The simplest way to obtain the rainwater from your deck and gutter is to install a rain barrel. Rain barrels are just large containers, usually ranging in size of 50-80 gallon barrels, that capture the rainwater at the end of the downspout of your gutter. They are a simple, efficient, and low-cost method for homeowners to collect and recycle the water runoff from the deck.

Check out the video to learn more about rain barrels.

If you are considering installing a rain barrel around your deck, be sure to check with your city; some cities give away rain barrels for free or at least offer a discount.

Because Wahoo Decks offers an entirely waterproof area below your deck via our waterproof decking, all rainwater is caught by our watertight decking boards and can be directed to a gutter. The space below your deck will stay completely dry while the water can be recycled. Making a difference in our environment is vital to Wahoo Decks; that is why we are happy to offer waterproof decking systems with an under deck drainage system that makes it easy to harvest rainwater.

Wahoo Decks’ aluminum products, such as DryJoistEZ, and AridDek also help gain LEED credits.

  • Up to 2 points may be available for stormwater reduction (stormwater management practices)

Deck Ideas: 5 Safety Tips for Having an Outdoor Fire Pit

Deck Ideas: 5 Safety Tips for Having an Outdoor Fire Pit

Looking for ways to make your deck more enjoyable? Our deck ideas can help! One of the more popular deck ideas these days is adding an outdoor fire pit to your living area. No matter what season it is,  you can break out the fire pit with friends and family. After all, “According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, fire pits, or outdoor fireplaces, are the number one requested design feature today,” (HGTV).

While portable fire pits are a lot of fun, there are some serious safety precautions to keep in mind when handling them.

  1. Your outdoor fire pit should be at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustible surface.
  2. Avoid windy conditions by checking the weather forecast
  3. Stay up to date on any burn bans that might be in effect
  4. Pick up leaves and any other combustible materials in and around the fire pit
  5. Keep a container of water nearby and a garden hose close

While you’re getting ready to entertain and considering all your deck ideas, bear in mind the location you put your fire pit. Do NOT put a portable fire pit on your deck if it is made of wood. This can be very dangerous! If you were to knock over the coals it can also ruin your deck’s walking surface. However, with AridDek aluminum deck boards, you’ll never have to worry about coals from your portable fire pit ruining or igniting your deck.

Check out this video to see how AridDek aluminum decking compares to other common decking options in a hot charcoal test:

Remember, you should always keep your portable fire pit at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustible surface.

Decking Ideas: 2 Simple Tips to Extending the Life of Your Wahoo Aluminum Deck

Decking Ideas: 2 Simple Tips to Extending the Life of Your Wahoo Aluminum Deck

Your Wahoo aluminum deck – your outdoor living area – is your happy place. You designed your deck to be an oasis where you can relax and enjoy the outdoors.  So, when you are looking for decking ideas, you are careful and thoughtful. Your deck is also an investment. Therefore, you want it to last and to retain it’s beauty for many years to come.

To make sure your Wahoo aluminum deck lasts, you simply need to only do two things:

  1. Regular safety inspections
  2. Keep It Clean

A low maintenance aluminum deck is built to last but that doesn’t mean there isn’t more you can do to keep your deck looking brand new all year long. These two simple decking ideas and tips will insure that you not only have a safe deck but a beautiful one!

Yet, even if you are not yet a Wahoo Decks aluminum deck owner, these same two tips apply.

Of course, there will likely be additional maintenance but these two points are a good place to start in maintaining your deck!

1. Check Your Deck

“Twice a year – usually in spring and fall – it’s a good idea to check on the structure and overall state of your deck” (5 Tips for Extending the Life of Your Outdoor Wooden Deck).

  • Check for split or decaying wood.
  • Keep an eye out for holes, which could mean insects have burrowed in and made a home.
  • Check for a widened gap between the house and the ledger, which may signal that the bolts need tightening.
  • Flashing around the ledger board prevents moisture from building up and causing rot. Look to see if it has pulled away from the house, and make sure caulk that seals overlapping pieces is intact. Inspect for mud or debris stuck between the spacer and the exterior wall, a sign the flashing’s been breached.
  • Firmly grasp and wriggle railing to make sure they’re secure. Also double-check whether they meet local codes, which generally call for a railing at least 3 feet high with balusters spaced no wider than 4 inches apart.
  • Look for loose connections between posts and the deck’s beams.

2. Keep Your Deck Clean

“Don’t let leaves, sticks, and so forth pile up on your deck.” (5 Tips for Extending the Life of Your Outdoor Wooden Deck).

  • Be on the lookout for bees and wasps that may be building nests, and treat the area accordingly. Don’t have lights on all night around your deck, as this attracts bugs – if you want lighting on your deck at night, choose a variety that does not attract insects. (5 Tips for Extending the Life of Your Outdoor Wooden Deck).
  • Clean your aluminum deck regularly. This can be done with warm water and soap. The best method of cleaning your aluminum deck is by regular washing using a solution of warm water and non‐abrasive, pH neutral detergent. Your AridDek aluminum deck surface should be thoroughly rinsed after cleaning to remove all residues. AridDek should be cleaned using a soft cloth or sponge or a natural bristle brush.

By cleaning your aluminum deck regularly or as needed, you are protecting an investment and keeping your deck in excellent condition. Cleaning your AridDek watertight aluminum deck will only prolong the longevity of an already long lasting deck!
