Decking Ideas: 2 Simple Tips to Extending the Life of Your Wahoo Aluminum Deck

Decking Ideas: 2 Simple Tips to Extending the Life of Your Wahoo Aluminum Deck

Your Wahoo aluminum deck – your outdoor living area – is your happy place. You designed your deck to be an oasis where you can relax and enjoy the outdoors.

When you are looking for decking ideas, you are careful and thoughtful. Your deck is also an investment. Therefore, you want it to last and to retain it’s beauty for many years to come.

To make sure your Wahoo aluminum deck lasts, you simply need to only do two things:

  1. Regular safety inspections
  2. Keep It Clean

A low maintenance aluminum deck is built to last but that doesn’t mean there isn’t more you can do to keep your deck looking brand new all year long. These two simple deck ideas and tips will insure that you not only have a safe deck but a beautiful one!

Yet, even if you are not yet a Wahoo Decks aluminum deck owner, these same two tips apply.

Of course, there will likely be additional maintenance but these two points are a good place to start in maintaining your deck!

1. Check Your Deck

“Twice a year – usually in spring and fall – it’s a good idea to check on the structure and overall state of your deck” (5 Tips for Extending the Life of Your Outdoor Wooden Deck).

  • Check for split or decaying wood.
  • Keep an eye out for holes, which could mean insects have burrowed in and made a home.
  • Check for a widened gap between the house and the ledger, which may signal that the bolts need tightening.
  • Flashing around the ledger board prevents moisture from building up and causing rot. Look to see if it has pulled away from the house, and make sure caulk that seals overlapping pieces is intact. Inspect for mud or debris stuck between the spacer and the exterior wall, a sign the flashing’s been breached.
  • Firmly grasp and wriggle railing to make sure they’re secure. Also double-check whether they meet local codes, which generally call for a railing at least 3 feet high with balusters spaced no wider than 4 inches apart.
  • Look for loose connections between posts and the deck’s beams.

2. Keep Your Deck Clean

“Don’t let leaves, sticks, and so forth pile up on your deck.” (5 Tips for Extending the Life of Your Outdoor Wooden Deck).

  • Be on the lookout for bees and wasps that may be building nests, and treat the area accordingly. Don’t have lights on all night around your deck, as this attracts bugs – if you want lighting on your deck at night, choose a variety that does not attract insects.
  • Clean your aluminum deck regularly. This can be done with warm water and soap. The best method of cleaning your aluminum deck is by regular washing using a solution of warm water and non‐abrasive, pH neutral detergent. Your AridDek aluminum deck surface should be thoroughly rinsed after cleaning to remove all residues. AridDek should be cleaned using a soft cloth or sponge or a natural bristle brush.

By cleaning your aluminum deck regularly or as needed, you are protecting an investment and keeping your deck in excellent condition. Cleaning your AridDek watertight aluminum deck will only prolong the longevity of an already long lasting deck!

Environmentally Friendly Decking Material

Environmentally Friendly Decking Material

recyclable aluminum decking material by wahoo decks

AridDek aluminum decking by Wahoo Decks is 100% recyclable and eco-friendly.

When you think about recycling you probably don’t think about decking material

Instead of decking material, you likely think of sorting your plastics and cans into separate bins. After all, aluminum cans are the most recycled item in the United States. It’s also no surprise if you ‘consider that over two-thirds of all aluminum ever produced are still in use today’ (The Aluminum Association). There are even more ways to make your home eco-friendly. For example, you can install an environmentally friendly aluminum deck.

Aluminum deck material and aluminum decking are manufactured from recycled products and easily recycled itself.

Recyclable aluminum decking and decking material are different from other common deck boards. First, it is 100% recyclable. Additionally, there are no harsh chemicals or VOCs. It requires little maintenance to keep it beautiful.

While wood is recyclable, it is naturally going to rot over time. On the other hand, aluminum decking material will never rot or rust. Furthermore, non-recyclable plastics make up the contents of composite decks. That’s because its components cannot be separated.

“In terms of green building, the biggest objection to composite decking is that, although it lasts a long time, it is very difficult to dispose of once it reaches its life’s end” (Evans).

“Aluminum decks are an excellent option for durability and sustainability. Generally made with recycled content, aluminum is also fully recyclable. So, any scrap from construction can be reused. Should you replace your aluminum deck one day? The deck boards, which often have the look of wood, can also be recycled instead of going to the landfill. Aluminum is likely the toughest decking product you can buy. It’s entirely water-resistant and stays cooler than many other deck materials in summer. That means you can comfortably walk across it barefoot” (Huso).

Wahoo Decks offers a variety of recyclable aluminum decking material. They use 45% recycled content from industrial and post-consumer aluminum scrap in the manufacturing process. This means all of Wahoo Decks products, such as DryJoist, DryJoistEZ, AridDek, and Wahoo Rail are environmentally friendly! By installing Wahoo aluminum deck boards you benefit from not only having a sustainable deck drainage system but also an added bonus of a durable waterproof deck.

Aluminum recycling, whether it’s a can or a deck, contributes to making the world a greener place to live.  Wahoo Decks is proud to be apart of that. Benefits of Using Aluminum Deck Stairs

Benefits of Using Aluminum Deck Stairs

Wahoo offers quality engineered, aluminum decking and railing.

But what about stairs? Have you considered aluminum deck stairs?

aluminum deck stairsWhat do you think of when you envision your perfect deck? You’re likely not picturing aluminum deck stairs. However, maybe that should move to the top of your list!

You probably think about the size and type of decking you would use. However, you also need to plan on whether or not your perfect deck will have stairs.

There are a few benefits to adding deck stairs to your deck. A deck with stairs increases the value of your home. It also provides easy access to and from the deck to the yard and is also aesthetically pleasing.

“Building deck stairs will provide ready access to the yard and add value to your home” (DIY Network).

Now that you’ve decided on stairs, you’ll need to decide what type of tread to use. Many homeowners and contractors will use the decking they built with as stair tread. For example, AridDek is an aluminum decking board commonly used for commercial and residential decks. But did you know AridDek can be used as step tread for your deck stairs?

Here are a few benefits to using AridDek for your aluminum deck stairs:

  • Safety
AridDek’s non-slip surface provides steady footing in wet or dry environments.
  • Durability
AridDek decking was designed and engineered for high traffic use in the most demanding applications. It is also naturally resistant to the deteriorating effects of direct sunlight and is fire resistant. AridDek is extremely resistant to staining, impervious to insects and won’t splinter, decay, or rot.
  • Performance
AridDek will not age or wear like alternative decking materials. The new appearance will show for years with occasional mild soap and water cleaning.
  • Cool to the touch
AridDek’s high thermal conductivity will not retain heat, ensuring a cool to the touch surface even on a hot summer day.
  • Environmentally friendly
Finally, AridDek is approximately 50% recycled aluminum. Using the recycled material consumes only 5% of the energy otherwise necessary to produce virgin aluminum. AridDek is a sustainable building product and environmentally responsible; aluminum is fully and repeatedly recyclable.

P1010005Are you building a deck for commercial or residential applications? Either way, Wahoo Decks is proud to offer AridDek aluminum decking as a durable and sustainable product for your deck. AridDek is a durable option that will leave your deck stairs looking and feeling brand new. Deck Ideas: 5 Safety Tips for Having an Outdoor Fire Pit

Deck Ideas: 5 Safety Tips for Having an Outdoor Fire Pit

Looking for ways to make your deck more enjoyable? Our deck ideas can help!

One of the more popular deck ideas these days is adding a firepit to your outdoor living area.

With the autumn season officially started, you are probably ready to break out the fire pit with friends and family. After all, “According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, fire pits, or outdoor fireplaces, are the number one requested design feature today,” (HGTV).

While portable fire pits are a lot of fun, there are some serious safety precautions to keep in mind when handling them.

  1. Your fire pit should be at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustible surface.
  2. Avoid windy conditions by checking the weather forecast
  3. Stay up to date on any burn bans that might be in effect
  4. Pick up leaves and any other combustible materials in and around the fire pit
  5. Keep a container of water nearby and a garden hose close

While you’re getting ready for the fall season and considering all your deck ideas, bear in mind the location you put your fire pit. Do NOT put a portable fire pit on your deck if it is made of wood. This can be very dangerous! If you were to knock over the coals it can also ruin your deck’s walking surface. However, with AridDek aluminum deck boards, you’ll never have to worry about coals from your portable fire pit ruining or igniting your deck.

Check out this video to see how AridDek aluminum decking compares to other common decking options in a hot charcoal test:

Remember, you should always keep your portable fire pit at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustible surface.
