When planning the layout of your deck, don’t forget to consider plants for the space. Plants enhance the look and feel of your outdoor living area. While plants are both functional and beautiful, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when choosing plants for your deck.
Pest Repellent Varieties
When enjoying your deck, you don’t want to spend the entire time swatting at flies or smacking mosquitoes. Instead of using bug spray, consider plants that will naturally do the job for you. Here are a few of our favorites and what bugs they keep away:
Petunias – these brightly colored flowers not only look and smell amazing, but they also keep away beetles, aphids, and tomato worms
Marigolds – golden and beautiful, marigolds will help keep mosquitoes and aphids out of your deck garden space
Lavender – both flagrant and beautiful, known to repel mosquitoes, fleas, flies, and moths
Alliums – large purple flowers that defend against cabbage worms, aphids, carrot flies, and slugs
When caring for your plants and flowers, consider using containers for your deck. Unless you have ample space to create planter boxes for soil and irrigation, containers is the way to go. You can plant a wide variety of flowers, shrubs, and grasses in containers. Some of the easiest plants to care for include geranium, hibiscus, lantana, coleus, and Japanese forest grass. But don’t limit yourself to this short list. Visit your local garden center for more ideas for the best container flowers and grasses for your deck.
Plant for Privacy
Not all deck owners will have a need to create a privacy barrier, but those that would like more privacy, can plant their way to a private oasis. Use your creativity to create a more private deck with shrubs, trees, and bushes right on your deck. Small evergreen trees and shrubs that grow tall instead of wider are a great option. Using arborvitae and cypress are both good choices that you can keep in containers that will grow into a natural wall of greenery.
Clematis is a flowering vine that is a beautiful way to create a curtain between you and your neighbors. Boxwoods are a beautiful shrub that you can plant in a row to make a screen for your deck. You can also include some horsetail reed grass or even some bamboo for a similar effect. A combination of these privacy creating plants can make your deck both secluded and beautiful.
Plants can elevate any deck to its full potential. However, if you are unhappy with your current deck situation, maybe it’s time for a change. If you’re looking to install or upgrade your residential deck, call our team at Wahoo Decks. We will design the most durable and functional deck for your home. Occupy your deck to the fullest extent with the right accessories for the spring season. After a cold winter season, everyone is ready to be outside and soaking up the sunshine. Spring deck entertaining is a great way to kick off the outdoor entertaining season and fully enjoy all your deck offers.
Successful outdoor entertaining requires some basic furnishings and comforts to help accommodate guests that visit your deck. A folding table and camp chairs could do the job. Or you can create an outdoor oasis that will benefit you during each season. As your trusted deck experts at Wahoo Decks, we are happy to use our years of experience to help you achieve top deck status.
Here are our picks for 4 essential spring decking accessories:
1. Deck Furniture
Deck furniture is available in a wide range of materials, colors, and styles. Purchasing high quality items can be done at multiple price points. Choose furniture that fits your needs on your deck while also fulfilling the vision you have for your deck. With deck furniture your main focus should be quality and comfort.
Use the fresh spring weather to care for plants and flowers around your deck. While a spring and summer accessory, planters add a touch of greenery or color to decks that make entertaining that much more fun. Whether you’re planting primarily ornamental plants and flowers or using a small garden box to grow your own veggies, planters add interest to any deck space.
If you’re using a planter on your aluminum decking, it is important to use something elevated to resist staining the powder coated finish on your aluminum deck boards- and always avoid anything with metal legs, as those can cause your aluminum decking to rust.
When shopping for deck accessories, a deck box should be at the top of your list. Deck boxes allow for storage of other accessories, while completing your cohesive deck décor. Many full deck furniture sets offer a coordinating deck box as well. Locating a matching deck box is a task easily completed.
With the chill of winter lingering after the sun sets, a fire pit helps to give parties just the right amount of warmth to keep going. The choice is yours be it a gas fire pit that allows you to control the flame or a traditional wood burning fire pit. Fire pits are available in many different sizes and styles.
If you decide to use a firepit on your aluminum deck, it is important to use something between metal bottoms or legs and your deck surface. Metal-on-metal contact with your deck can cause the powder-coated surface of your deck to scratch and cause your deck to rust.

We get calls and emails from potential customers every week. Invariably, one of them always asks: Why should I use aluminum decking for my outdoor living space? Most people think of traditional wood products for their deck design ideas, like pressure-treated pine or exotic hardwoods. Yet, there are other options for building a deck or replacing their current decking surface. Many of our customers have discovered the advantages of Wahoo Decks’ waterproof aluminum decks and structural deck drainage systems.
Aluminum Deck Boards: Same Conveniences Of Traditional Wood, But With Many Advantages
Unlike traditional wood or composite decking options, Ariddek aluminum deck boards interlock to create a watertight walking surface. This feature creates a dry under deck area so you can enjoy your outdoor living space, rain or shine. Place a hammock or a swing under your deck, relax, and watch the rain. Or park the lawnmower and other tools under your deck to keep them out of the elements. Even better, create a workspace and complete outdoor projects year-round!
If your deck is not elevated enough, or if you don’t need dry space below your deck, Fortis aluminum deck boards offer aluminum decking benefits without the watertight feature. Fortis has grooves on each panel’s sides that accept hidden fastener clips– just like grooved wood or composite decking materials.
Low Maintenance Decking Options
Aside from ease of installation and deck design benefits, homeowners love the fact Ariddek and Fortis aluminum deck boards are low-maintenance decking options – definitely requiring less maintenance than wood or composite decking. Aluminum decking is a lot more resistant to elements, such as water, sunlight, pests. It can also be resistant to fire that can damage other types of decking materials. Also, you never need to stain or seal the powder-coated aluminum finish. Clean your aluminum deck periodically (depending on conditions) with a mild soap and soft brush. No pressure washer is required! (As a matter of fact, we recommend against the use of pressure washers or chemical cleaners because they could potentially damage paint or cause abrasions to the surface of your deck boards.)
Ariddek and Fortis decking surfaces are also excellent for marine applications. Our marine-grade aluminum decking is not susceptible to the same warping, rotting, splitting, and fading problems encountered with wood and composite decking in marine environments. Ariddek is also the perfect deck surface for upper-level sun decks, or party decks, on boat docks. Ariddek creates an attractive and low-maintenance upper deck for your dock that will also protect and channel rain.
With aluminum decking materials from Wahoo Decks, regular maintenance expense is a thing of the past. Aluminum decking materials never rot, chip, warp, or splinter, unlike these wooden deck planks that have buckled due to exposure to moisture and heat.ain away from boats, personal watercraft, and outdoor furniture.
Some of our biggest fans are actually the smallest. Kids and pets love aluminum deck surfaces! Aluminum decks stay cooler to the touch than wood or composite decking when exposed to extreme temperatures because aluminum decking reflects and dissipates heat much better than more dense wood and composite decking materials.

Looking for ways to make your deck more enjoyable? Our deck ideas can help! One of the more popular deck ideas these days is adding an outdoor fire pit to your living area. No matter what season it is, you can break out the fire pit with friends and family. After all, “According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, fire pits, or outdoor fireplaces, are the number one requested design feature today,” (HGTV).
While portable fire pits are a lot of fun, there are some serious safety precautions to keep in mind when handling them.
Your outdoor fire pit should be at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustible surface.
Avoid windy conditions by checking the weather forecast
Stay up to date on any burn bans that might be in effect
Pick up leaves and any other combustible materials in and around the fire pit
Keep a container of water nearby and a garden hose close
While you’re getting ready to entertain and considering all your deck ideas, bear in mind the location you put your fire pit. Do NOT put a portable fire pit on your deck if it is made of wood. This can be very dangerous! If you were to knock over the coals it can also ruin your deck’s walking surface. However, with AridDek aluminum deck boards, you’ll never have to worry about coals from your portable fire pit ruining or igniting your deck.

Remember, you should always keep your portable fire pit at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustible surface.
