How important is it to make the best deck railing choice when planning your aluminum deck project?
Most people, when preparing to build their dream deck, do a lot of research. They consider a plethora of deck ideas – including decking materials and deck systems – and even spend time looking at various deck designs. Then, they make their decision and get started on their deck plans.
Often, however, that is just phase one. The next step is considering deck railing.
Of course, it’s not rare to have a deck without railing. However, that’s only possible if your deck is ground-level. If you plan to have an elevated deck, deck rail will be a “must” for your project.
When contemplating the best deck railing choice, each deck rail option has its pros and cons.
At Wahoo Decks, we manufacturer aluminum deck railing. If you’ve never researched or thought about using aluminum deck rail before, it may seem like a somewhat unusual idea. Yet, when you learn about the benefits, you might see it’s the top deck railing choice.
Here are 7 reasons Wahoo Rail aluminum deck railing is the obvious deck railing choice:
1. Aluminum deck rail is long-lasting and strong
We use the finest available aluminum for our deck railing systems. What this means to you is that it’s very sturdy and durable. It doesn’t rust like traditional metal deck railing either.
2. Wahoo Rail aluminum deck railing is intelligently engineered
Our deck railing is specifically designed by experienced engineers to ensure it starts out with stellar performance and beauty and maintains that reliability and appeal over time.
Furthermore, while it’s the perfect complement to our Wahoo aluminum decking, it’s also architected and produced so that it can be an add-on to any decking surface desired.
3. Aluminum deck railing is a low-maintenance railing
Traditional deck rail materials – like wood, composites, or steel – need frequent upkeep to remain looking good and standing strong. This is not the case with aluminum deck rail. We powder-coat our railing so that it won’t crack, chip, warp, peel, or need re-painting. All you need do is hose it down to clean it off.
4. Aluminum deck rail options are aesthetically-pleasing
The clean lines of our aluminum deck railing make it a very attractive option and the perfect complement to nearly any deck design. Wahoo Rail comes in three different neutral shades – White, Antique Bronze, and Mocha – to match a variety of different color schemes.
Additionally, Wahoo Glass Rail takes the very best of our aluminum railing and pairs it with tempered glass panels – either Clear or “Twilight” (tinted) – for a deck railing design look that is out of this world. Using Wahoo Glass deck railing means nothing obstructs your view or gets in the way of your ability to enjoy the full beauty of your outdoor deck scenery.
5. Our aluminum deck railing offers a great degree of customization for functionality too
Another highlight of our aluminum deck railing – that can also be traced back to its design and engineering – is its ease-of-use in achieving a myriad of deck designs. Wahoo Rail can be utilized and configured in nearly any linear-based shape you can conceive of, allowing for the creation of truly customized deck.
6. It’s eco-friendly…
Our deck railing systems at Wahoo consists of 50% recycled aluminum. This means it’s environmentally-friendly—much more so than most other decking choices. Combine that with the fact that Wahoo Rail requires no harsh chemicals for cleaning or upkeep, and you can rest easy knowing your deck railing is a socially responsible, “green” choice too!
7. Aluminum railing is an economically-smart choice
Aluminum deck railing is affordable and even more so when you consider savings over time. Off-the-bat aluminum rail is often on-par with the pricing of other deck rail options. Yet, because of its limited maintenance and extreme strength and durability, you don’t need to re-finish, re-do, or replace it like other deck rail choices.
It’s no doubt you have several options for your deck railing decision—many of them in fact. However, you’d be hard-pressed to find another deck rail choice that delivers ALL the same benefits and features of Wahoo Rail – or Wahoo Glass Rail – in a single deck rail system. Not to mention, the Wahoo name and reputation stand behind every railing. With Wahoo aluminum railing, you not only get a deck you are proud of for many years to come but that you will also enjoy season after season, without tons of effort and upkeep.
Decided you want to build a deck but you need help with deck design ideas? If you don’t know where to start, this is normal. There are many things to consider. Probably one of the first things you need to think about when building a deck is the size you want your deck to be.
The size of your deck can depend on many other outside factors, such as budget, space, and your surroundings. After examining these things you can easily decide what the perfect size of your deck should be.
What’s Your Budget?
Knowing what your budget is before you get too immersed in the design planning of building your deck is very important. When budgeting, think about the cost of decking materials and labor. After you’ve come up with a budget that you are content with, it’s time to start thinking about the space you’ll want or need for your deck.
How Will You Use It?
Ask yourself when you begin to design, “What will I be using my deck for?” Answering this question will help you size the deck to your needs. For example, if you plan on throwing a lot of outdoor parties, you may want to remember to keep your deck larger so that there is plenty of room for seats, people, and tables. Once you know how you are going to use the space, sketch out the deck size and then place everything you’ll use there. Don’t forget your furniture, plants, grills, or seats. Keep in mind the area under your deck when you are planning the measurements of your deck. The under-deck can be used for outdoor living or storage. If you choose a waterproof decking product, such as AridDek or DryJoistEZ structural deck drainage system, the space will also be protected from the rain.
What Is Your Space Like?
The space and size of your deck can also depend on your surroundings, like the size of your house and yard. “A deck’s scale should reference the size of the house and yard proportionately” (Establishing An Appropriate Scale). Consider what size of deck will best balance the house and surroundings. Ask yourself, “How much space do I really need?” You may want a wrap-around deck and if that’s the case, just remember how large a yard you have. Same goes for even if you want a small petite deck, you must have the proper amount of yard for your decking project and this must be considered. For best results when sizing your deck, use 2’ increments, an example of these types of measurements would be: 10’ x 12’, 12’ X 14’, or 14’ X 16’.

North Georgia Boat Lift & Marine Construction Co. is one of the first to install Wahoo Glass Panel Railing on a dock at Lake Blue Ridge in Georgia.
Gainesville, GA September, 30 2014 – Award winning NGBL North Georgia Boat Lift & Marine Construction Co. has been installing Wahoo products for over a decade. Once the glass railing became available NGBL shared the concept with dock owners.
It did not take long for a customer to make the switch from picket dock railing to glass railing because of the unique appearance that glass railing added to the dock.
“The all-new glass rail system has been very well received by our customers,” said Jon Pack, owner of NGBL Marine Construction Co.., “another example of Wahoo’s continuous launch of new products and improvements.”
Wahoo Glass Panel Railing is built to last for many years to come. The glass rail panels are made with approved tempered (or safety) glass. Manufacturers of tempered glass use heat treatments during the manufacturing process that increase the durability, strength and safety of the glass. If tempered glass is broken, the glass is engineered to break into small pebbles that are less likely to cause injury.
Available in 4′, 5′, and 6′ kits, for both straight rail and stair rail runs, Wahoo Glass Panel Railing relies on the same time tested, low-maintenance solution as our standard picket Wahoo Rail offering; Marine-Grade Aluminum that won’t rust, warp or twist over time. The aluminum rail sections are quick and easy to install; having 36″ & 42″ heights available, Wahoo Glass Railing is well suited for both commercial and residential rail applications.
Whether refurbishing existing docks or decks, or building new, this dock railing choice will preserve that perfect view while maintaining the fundamentals of safety and durability that are requirements of any handrail system.

AridDek low-maintenance aluminum decking chosen by Hawaiian vacation estate & real estate developer for its durability, ease of installation, and watertight qualities.
When short term vacation estate rental and real estate development firm owner, Glen Robinson of Ocean View Oahu, INC decided to take on the project of building a deck for two of his rental properties, it was important that he find a product that was durable, easy to install, and low-maintenance. Since Robinson has background in the housing industry, he knew that all of these qualities were vital to his project.
“Being in real estate and the owner of several high end short term Hawaii vacation rentals has taught me the value of both form and function,” says Robinson. “I gravitated towards the Wahoo AridDek System to save both on future maintenance and up front labor costs due to the product’s ease of installation and product durability.”
Because AridDek is low-maintenance aluminum decking, there is no time or money spent sanding, panting, staining, sealing, or waterproofing. AridDek is manufactured with exact precision, its interlocking decking boards securely and easily lock into place every time which makes it easy to install.
The durability of AridDek is outstanding. AridDek is resistant to staining, impervious to insects, and won’t splinter, decay or rot. AridDek’s low-maintenance, ease of installation, and durability are just a few of the reasons Robinson chose AridDek.
“As an added benefit the water drainage feature [of AridDek] will make sure my substructure is protected from the elements for years to come,” says Robinson.
AridDek’s watertight features are a bonus to its design and benefits. The interlocking engineering of AridDek’s aluminum decking boards results in a completely watertight deck that creates a dry outdoor living space below.
Whether needing low-maintenance aluminum decking or an aluminum decking board that is easy to install and watertight, AridDek is a cost-effective answer to deck construction for any property owner.

Whitcher Builders Selected DryJoistEZ and Wahoo Rail by Wahoo Decks for Sea Spray Multi-level Oceanside Condo Building in Hampton, New Hampshire.
Wahoo Decks, a leading manufacturer of award winning outdoor decking products announced today that Whitcher Builders will be using their products DryJoistEZ (US Pat No. 8,276,344) and Wahoo Rail for their project.
DryJoistEZ is a structural deck drainage system that provides the structure of the deck, a waterproof decking solution, and a finished ceiling with a traditional beadboard appearance underneath in a single product.
Whitcher will also be utilizing Wahoo Rail – an aluminum decking railing from Wahoo for their second phase of multi-level Oceanside condos in Hampton, New Hampshire.
When it came to building Sea Spray Condos it was important that Stuart Mitchell, operation manager of Whitcher Builders, find an application that was economical and easy to install.
Mitchell stated, “We looked at a lot of different options and DryJoistEZ worked out to be the most economical for the application. The main reason we found it to be economical is the ease of installation.”
In addition to the ease of installation, Whitcher Buliders also chose DryJoistEZ for its watertight beadboard appearance for the Sea Spray’s multi-level condo balconies.
“Both the decks and walkway required that they not allow for water to drip through as the space below each deck and walkway was another deck and walkway. Because of the design we found that the DryJoistEZ system was the most economical way to accomplish this design criteria,” said Mitchell.
Since DryJoistEZ serves triple duty as the structure of the deck, a finished ceiling and a waterproofing solution, Whitcher Builders was able to accomplish the design criteria of the balconies on the project in one step.
For railing on the Sea Spray Project, Whitcher Builders decided to go with Wahoo’s aluminum railing, Wahoo Rail. “The reasoning behind the Wahoo Rail was simply because it is designed to work with DryJoistEZ . . . it is architecturally pleasing and very easy to install,” said Mitchell.
Wahoo Rail powder-coated, aluminum railing will not rot, splinter or warp over time. The Wahoo Rail on the Sea Spray project was pre-assembled at the Wahoo factory and shipped directly to the job site in complete panel sections. The factory, pre-assembly option for the rail is just another example of Wahoo Decks’ determination to reduce cost on the install side for decks and balconies in multi-family applications.
Whitcher Builders has selected DryJoistEZ and Wahoo Rail as its ‘go to’ product for balcony applications. “We are doing another project on the books where we will be using Wahoo Decks’ products as well,” said Mitchell.

At Wahoo Decks, we appreciate our customers, that’s why we will keep you informed about your orders (decks shipping) as they are being processed and shipped.
We strive to ensure all materials are protected and received as part of your decks shipping. Since shipping can be a confusing subject we have decided to explain how the shipping process works in more detail when you buy aluminum decking products from Wahoo Decks!
LTL COMMON CARRIERS
Wahoo Decks uses less than truckload (LTL) common carriers for our decks shipping – to deliver our joists, decking and railing materials. The main advantage to using an LTL carrier is that a shipment may be transported for a fraction of the cost of hiring an entire truck and trailer for an exclusive shipment. Also accessory services are available from LTL carries like residential deliveries and 24 hour notification prior to delivery. United Parcel Service (UPS) is sometimes used on small items when the length is 9 feet or less and 150 pounds or less. LTL carriers collect freight from various shippers and consolidate that freight onto enclosed trailers typically between 26 and 53 feet long. It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that the shipping address can accommodate the longest length of these trailers.
DELIVERY OF YOUR ORDER
Wahoo Decks takes pride in assembling your order from the precision cuts to the custom pallet to the shrink wrap. However, we understand that everyone makes mistakes sometimes so please inspect all materials for damage or shortage before the LTL carrier driver leaves. In the unfortunate event that you find damaged/missing material please note it on the Bill of Laden (BOL) with your signature and the driver’s signature, take pictures of the damage material, ACCEPT the damage material and contact us immediately. This is important to document correctly so we can ensure the damage material will be covered by insurance.
Wahoo Decks products are fully insured and if you have a claim we will handle it promptly. Typically, while the LTL carrier is working on the claim we do not wait for the claim to be handled before sending out replacement material. We know our customer’s needs and will not make you wait for replacement parts. All replacement parts are quickly sent out to you, free of charge, giving you peace of mind.
Wahoo Decks wants your experience to be as pleasant and easy as possible. We guarantee our products to be free of manufacturing errors or product defects.
