Will AridDek's aluminum deck boards get hot during the summer?

Yes, but they will be cooler than other materials. The thermal conductivity of AridDek’s aluminum deck boards dissipates heat, providing a cooler deck surface than most wood or composite surfaces.

What colors can I choose for my AridDek waterproof decking?

AridDek Waterproof Deck System is available in three color options: Granite, Sandstone, and Artisan Clay. If you’d like to see the colors for yourself, you can order product sample kits here.

Is routine maintenance required to keep my deck looking new?

No: one of the most important features of your new AridDek aluminum deck surface is that you won’t have to paint, stain, or refinish it in order to keep your deck looking new.  We do recommend that you wash your deck surface periodically using mild soapy water and a soft bristle brush.

Will my AridDek system ever rust?

AridDek is extruded from an aluminum alloy (6005-T5 aluminum) that will not rust. However, as with other decking materials including wood, composite, or even concrete, steel products that come in contact with AridDek can rust and even stain your AridDek aluminum deck surface.

Do not store metal objects that could rust and stain your deck on AridDek. Avoid metal working on AridDek, as well. When installing iron railings, protect AridDek with a non-plastic drop cloth to prevent grinding dust and weld splatter from settling on the surface of AridDek.

Is AridDek slippery?

No: AridDek aluminum decking is not slippery. It has a powder-coated finish that provides steady footing in wet or dry conditions. Additionally, the ribbed surface provides additional traction and conceals the hidden fastener system for a gapless, skid-free surface.

Is AridDek environmentally friendly?

Yes: AridDek is manufactured from 45% recycled industrial and post-consumer aluminum scrap. As such, this product also assists builders in achieving points toward LEED credits based on the standards set forth by the LEED Green Building Rating System, within the categories of Recycled Content of Materials, Construction Waste Management and Stormwater Design.

LEED Credits: MR Credit2.1, MR Credit 2.2, MR Credit 4.1, MR Credit 4.2, SS Credit 6.1

Do I have to pitch AridDek?

Yes: we suggest a minimum 1/8” pitch per linear foot. This is a minimum pitch that will not be visible to the naked eye but provides a generous slope for water to drain away from the structure.

Do I need special tools to install AridDek?

No: AridDek can be installed with a minimum number of readily available tools. No special tools are necessary.

Can I cantilever AridDek? Is there a suggested overhang?

AridDek is made up of interlocking deck boards that create the surface for your deck. And since it is a deck board, it cannot be cantilevered. A two-inch overhang beyond the fascia on the drainage side is suggested to shield deck joists from backsplash during heavy rain. Creating this small overhang also makes gutter installation easier.

Are AridDek waterproof deck boards compliant with local and international building codes?

Yes. AridDek meets or exceeds deck building code specifications and guidelines for aluminum structures, as recommended by AA ADM 1 and required by the International Building Code – 2015. Building Code Requirements – International Building Code – 2015.

My deck frame was built using ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) pressure treated wood, is it compatible with AridDek aluminum decking boards?

Yes: AridDek was designed to be compatible with ACQ treated lumber. It is produced with a special powder-coat paint barrier to prevent ACQ contact with the bare aluminum.

Do I have to install gutters or downspouts?

Gutters or downspout installation is optional. Some people choose to use gutters to prevent water run-off interference with landscape features.

Does AridDek replace deck joists?

No: Although AridDek does have a built-in drainage channel, it cannot be used to replace joists, rafters, or support beams.

What type of blade should I use to cut AridDek?
  • Carbide-tipped nonferrous blade
  • 12” blade-96 tooth
  • 10” blade 80 tooth
  • 7 ¼” blade 62 tooth
What are joist spacing requirements when installing AridDek aluminum decking?

The maximum allowable joist spacing is 24 inches on-center when installing the aluminum deck boards on pre-existing or new joist structures.

How much does AridDek weigh?

AridDek Aluminum Deck Boards weigh 1lb per linear foot or 2lbs per square foot. (Approximately ½ the weight of traditional wooden deck boards.)

How does the DryJoistEZ system differ from other deck waterproofing products?

DryJoistEZ is a structural deck drainage system; this means that along with being 100% waterproof, it can also span up to six feet between supporting beams, which means it can replace some of the joists you would traditionally use to build your deck.

The other popular deck waterproofing systems on the market are membrane systems and “under decking” systems that are installed below your deck joists. Both of these waterproofing methods come with labor-intensive installation processes and are effective only for limited amounts of time.

The component materials used in the DryJoistEZ system are extruded from marine-grade aluminum, which makes them strong and extremely durable.  When the DryJoistEZ system is installed, it provides a solid waterproof structure that will never leak. Additionally, DryJoistEZ is mounted on top of your deck frame, which extends the life of framing materials.

What type of deck boards can I use with DryJoistEZ?

DryJoistEZ provides the ultimate flexibility when it comes to your deck surface options.  Your choices include composite deck boards, hardwoods, softwoods, etc.  In essence, DryJoistEZ has support every four inches to six inches, which allows you to fasten your deck boards every 4”/6”/8”/10”/12”.

Is DryJoistEZ environmentally friendly?

Yes: DryJoistEZ is manufactured using 45% recycled content from industrial and post-consumer aluminum scrap metal. It also channels rainwater, which reduces pollution from stormwater runoff.

Because of its recycled content and its ability to manage stormwater, DryJoistEZ also allows builders to achieve points toward LEED credit certification based on the standards set forth by the LEED Green Building Rating System, within the categories of Recycled Content of Materials, Construction Waste Management, and Stormwater Design.

My deck frame was built using ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) pressure treated wood, is it compatible with the DryJoistEZ system?

Yes: DryJoistEZ was designed for compatibility with ACQ treated lumber. It contains a special powder-coated paint barrier to prevent ACQ contact with the bare aluminum.

Do I need special tools to install or cut DryJoistEZ?

No: DryJoistEZ can be installed with a minimum number of readily-available tools. No special tools are necessary for installation.

How do I cut DryJoistEZ?
  • Carbide-tipped blade for cutting non-ferrous metals
  • 12” blade-96 tooth
  • 10” blade 80 tooth
  • 7 ¼” blade 62 tooth
Do I need to pitch DryJoistEZ?

Yes: we suggest a minimum of 1/8” downward pitch per foot (away from the house). This is a minimal pitch that will not be visible to the naked eye, yet provides a slope for water to drain away from the structure.

Can I cantilever DryJoistEZ? Is there a suggested overhang?

Yes:  DryJoistEZ can cantilever up to twelve inches.  A two-inch overhang beyond the header joist on the drainage side is suggested to shield the joists from backsplash due to heavy downpour and ease gutter installation. (Gutter installation is not required, but some people do choose to include one when they install DryJoistEZ.)

Is the DryJoistEZ deck drainage system compliant with local building codes and the International Building Code?

Yes: DryJoistEZ meets or exceeds deck building code specifications and guidelines for aluminum structures, as recommended by AA ADM 1 and required by the International Building Code – 2015.

Do I have to install gutters or downspouts?

Installing gutters or downspouts is not required, although they can be installed if you would like to incorporate your deck space with landscape architecture. (To direct the flow of water and prevent sod erosion.)

Will Fortis aluminum deck boards get hot during the summer?

Fortis is an eight-inch aluminum pre-grooved deck board that creates a low maintenance deck surface similar to traditional deck boards in appearance. Fortis is not watertight because of the gap between the boards.

Is routine maintenance involved in keeping my deck looking new?

No: one of the most important features of your new Fortis aluminum deck surface is that you won’t have to paint, stain, or refinish it in order to keep your deck looking new.  We do recommend that you wash your deck surface periodically using mild soapy water and a soft bristle brush. (Basically the same way you would wash a car.)

Is aluminum decking slippery?

  • 7 ¼” blade 62 tooth
What are the joist spacing requirements when installing Fortis aluminum decking?

The maximum allowable joist spacing is 24 inches on-center when installing the aluminum deck boards on pre-existing or new joist structures.

What components are included with the Wahoo Complete system?

A typical project consists of the balcony frame, decking, railing, and attachment hardware.

What sizes are available?

We custom-fabricate Wahoo Complete balconies for each project, so they can be made to just about any size.

How does a Wahoo Complete balcony attach to a building?

The connection details vary depending on the project.  A typical rod-hung balcony will consist of bolting the balcony frame to the building and attaching the support rods to steel knife plates that are also bolted into the structure.

What kind of railing do you offer?

We offer aluminum, vertical baluster railing in 3 stock colors of powder coat; Mocha, White, Antique Bronze.  Custom colors are also available at an additional cost depending on the volume of the project.

What kind of decking is used for the balconies?

We typically include our powder coated aluminum decking (Fortis) because it is lightweight, low maintenance, and durable and it is a great fit for balcony applications.

We can also install composite decking on the balconies if that is a better fit for your project.

Do you install Wahoo Complete balconies at my job site?

Wahoo Decks is a manufacturer, and we do not provide installation services. Installations are typically done by the framing contractor involved on a project.

The great thing about our prefabricated balconies is that a great deal of the work is done in our shop before the balcony arrives on site.  We weld and powder coat the frames and install the decking onto the frames in our shop.  We then assemble the rail sections for the balconies and pre-drill the holes for the railing attachment onto the decked frames.

Typical installation consists of attaching the railing sections to the pre-decked platforms after delivery, installing the knife plates onto the structure (if required), and attaching the balconies to the knife plates and structure.

What railing colors are available?

Wahoo Rail has an extremely durable, baked-enamel finish that is available in three color options: Antique Bronze, Mocha, and White.

What are the benefits of using aluminum deck railings?

Unlike common wood deck railing or composite deck railing that retain heat and create hot surfaces during the summertime; aluminum dissipates heat and ensures that your handrails stay cooler on hot days than traditional materials. Wahoo Rail is also powder-coated, which means that it resists UV damage caused by sun exposure.

Does the Wahoo Rail system meet building codes and safety standards?

Yes, Wahoo Rail meets AAMA 2603.02 and National Safety Standards and Codes.

How do I maintain my Wahoo Aluminum Railing?

Our powder-coated aluminum railing is incredibly easy to maintain.  We do recommend that you wash your railing occasionally with mild soapy water and a soft bristle brush.

What is included in the Wahoo Rail package?

The Wahoo Rail kit includes one post, and a 4 foot, 5 foot, or 6-foot section of rails and balusters, along with all of the hardware required to assemble and install your new Wahoo Aluminum Rail.

Is Wahoo Rail environmentally friendly?

Yes. Wahoo Rail is manufactured using 45% recycled content from industrial and post-consumer aluminum scrap.

What Wahoo Glass colors are available?

Wahoo Glass is available in Twilight (tinted) and Clear.

Can I use Wahoo Glass for indoor applications?

Wahoo Glass was designed for use on exterior deck railing applications, but we have had some creative customers use it for interior applications. If you do choose to use it for an indoor project, Wahoo Decks cannot offer support for that product or accept any liability for off-label use.

What are the dimensions of the glass panels? What about the brackets?

Dimensions vary depending on straight or stair applications:

Straight: 4″ x 5/16″ x 29.5″ panels are available for 36″ tall railings. Stair: 4″ x 5/16″ panels are available for 36″ tall stair railings.

The finished length of our straight pure/clear glass with brackets installed is 30 inches. The finished length of our twilight/tinted glass with brackets installed is 28-1/2 inches.

The brackets for the straight kit are 5.5 inches by 1 inch by 1 inch.   The brackets for the stair kit are 7.75 inches by 1 inch by 1 inch.
